| Bali - The Jewel Of Indonesia Part of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain, between Java to the west and Lombok to the east, the island of Bali is one of the world's favourite holiday and travel destinations. Often an overused word, Bali truly is a paradise. Friendly people, unique culture combined with it's nightlife, beaches and adventure sports, it's no surprise that Bali has held the eyes of the tourism world for so long.
The island was first visited by Europeans (Dutch) at the end of the 16th century and quickly an important trading post during the next 200 years, with the Dutch taking full control of the Hindu colony after a series of savage colonial wars. Tourism in Bali started as
early as the 1920's as people from all over Asia sailed into the harbours
to see the beaches and experience the mix of Hindu and European culture. The island officially became a part of the Indonesian States in 1948 after the Japanese had occupied during the Second World War. |
