The island was first visited by Europeans (Dutch) at the end of the 16th century and quickly an important trading post during the next 200 years, with the Dutch taking full control of the Hindu colony after a series of savage colonial wars.
Tourism in Bali started as
early as the 1920's as people from all over Asia sailed into the harbours
to see the beaches and experience the mix of Hindu and European culture.
Depsite Indonesia being a predominantly Muslim country, Bali remain over
90% Hindu.
The island officially became a part of the Indonesian States in 1948 after the Japanese had occupied during the Second World War.
